Indian Railways Digital Ticket Rules: Screenshots, PDFs And WhatsApp Ticket Copies No Longer Valid

Indian Railways digital ticket rules have been reinforced with a fresh advisory for passengers using digital unreserved tickets. The railway authorities have clarified that only the original ticket displayed in the Rail One app will be accepted during ticket inspections. Screenshots, PDF files, photographs, or tickets shared through WhatsApp or any other messaging platform will not be treated as valid travel documents. The move is aimed at preventing misuse of digital tickets and ensuring smoother verification during journeys.

The updated instructions are applicable only to digital unreserved tickets booked through the Rail One app and require passengers to carry the same mobile phone and registered mobile number used while booking the ticket.

Only the Original Rail One App Ticket Will Be Accepted

Indian Railways has made it clear that passengers must present the original digital ticket within the Rail One app whenever a travelling ticket examiner (TTE) asks for verification.

The following will not be accepted as proof of travel:

  • Screenshots of digital tickets
  • Photographs of tickets
  • PDF versions of tickets
  • Tickets forwarded via WhatsApp or any other messaging application

Railway officials have emphasised that the ticket should remain accessible on the same smartphone on which it was originally booked using the registered mobile number.

Ticket Must Be Linked to the Registered Mobile Number

According to the revised guidelines, a digital unreserved ticket is considered valid only if it can be displayed on the device and mobile number used during booking.

If a passenger fails to produce the original ticket from the registered device during inspection, the ticket may be treated as invalid, which could result in penalties under railway rules.

Passenger Penalised After Showing WhatsApp Screenshot

The clarification follows a recent incident on the Korba–Visakhapatnam Link Express (Train No. 18517).

During a routine ticket inspection, a woman travelling between Korba and Raipur presented a WhatsApp screenshot of her digital ticket. She informed the TTE that the ticket had been booked by her brother through the Rail One app and later forwarded to her.
