India’s First Bullet Train To Run By 2027: Complete Route And Progress Updates
India is set to achieve a historic milestone with its first bullet train connecting Mumbai and Ahmedabad, scheduled to begin operations by August 2027, according to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The high-speed rail project is progressing steadily, and Gujarat is laying a crucial role in bringing India’s bullet train vision to life.
During his speech at the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference at Ganpat University in Mehsana, Vaishnaw shared,
"As everyone is aware, the bullet train project is moving along quickly. Things are moving along quite nicely in Gujarat; girders have been put in, wire ducts have been finished, and work on the rails and electrical cabling is ongoing. Japanese Minister Nakano recently traveled to Gujarat to assess the project's status."
Bullet Train Timeline and Route
Vaishnaw confirmed that the target is to operate India’s first bullet train by August 2027. The minister, along with Hiromasa Nakano, Japan's Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism, recently inspected key project sites in Surat and Mumbai.
The 508-kilometer Mumbai–Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor will include 12 stations: Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand/Nadiad, Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati. The project, worth ₹1.1 lakh crore, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September 2017 at Sabarmati, Ahmedabad.
Progress and Construction Highlights
Updates from the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) reveal substantial progress:
Superstructure and Stations
Construction of superstructures at all Gujarati stations is underway, while rolling stock depots are being built in Surat and Ahmedabad. In Maharashtra, development has started on three elevated stations.
Gujarat’s Role in the Project
Vaishnaw highlighted Gujarat’s strategic importance: Gujarat was the best state to host the nation’s first bullet train due to its strong infrastructure track record. The state has built 2,764 km of new railway lines in the last 11 years, surpassing Denmark’s railway network.
During this period, Gujarat attracted ₹1.46 lakh crore in railway sector investments, extending benefits to other industries including electronics and semiconductors.
Semiconductor and Electronics Growth
The minister noted significant developments in Gujarat’s electronics sector:
The Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train project is not only a leap forward for India’s transport infrastructure but also a testament to the country’s growing industrial and technological capabilities.
