IRCTC Introduces Big Changes to Online Train Ticket Booking: New Rules Every Passenger Must Know
IRCTC online train ticket booking has become faster, smarter and more secure as Indian Railways introduces a major upgrade to its ticketing platform. From a redesigned website and mobile app to simplified booking steps and stricter rules for online general tickets, the latest changes aim to improve the overall travel experience. The new system reduces booking time, strengthens security against fraudulent reservations and introduces fresh verification requirements that every passenger should know before planning a journey.
IRCTC Launches Revamped Website and Mobile App
Indian Railways has unveiled a redesigned IRCTC website and mobile application with a fresh, user-friendly interface. The updated platform focuses on making ticket reservations quicker while offering a smoother browsing experience.
Passengers will notice a cleaner layout with fewer unnecessary screens and pop-ups, allowing them to complete bookings with greater ease. The redesigned system has been developed to make navigation simpler, especially during peak booking hours.
Save Passenger Details for Faster Ticket Booking
One of the most useful additions is the option to store passenger information directly in the user profile.
After saving personal details once, travellers will no longer have to enter the same information every time they reserve a ticket. This feature is expected to significantly reduce booking time, making the process especially convenient for frequent railway passengers.
Check Seat Availability Across All Classes on One Screen
The upgraded platform also introduces a more efficient way to compare travel options.
Instead of checking each class separately, users can now view seat availability across multiple travel classes on a single screen. This makes it easier to compare options before making a final decision and eliminates the need to switch between different pages repeatedly.
The checkout process has also been shortened, allowing passengers to complete reservations in fewer steps.
Enhanced Security Measures for Genuine Passengers
Indian Railways has strengthened the security features of its online booking system while making the process less complicated for users.
Repeated CAPTCHA verification and similar interruptions have been reduced to offer a smoother experience. At the same time, advanced technologies have been introduced to detect and prevent fraudulent bookings, helping ensure that genuine passengers, including those booking Tatkal tickets, receive fair access to reservations.
New Rules for Online General Ticket Bookings
Along with the platform upgrade, Indian Railways has introduced new verification rules for passengers purchasing unreserved (general) tickets through the RailOne app .
Passengers travelling on digitally booked general tickets must now carry an original photo identity card during their journey. This rule applies only to online general tickets and does not affect tickets purchased from railway reservation counters.
Additionally, every online general ticket will now be linked to the mobile number used at the time of booking, improving passenger verification.
Screenshots and Shared Tickets Will No Longer Be Valid
Railways has also tightened ticket verification procedures for online general ticket holders.
Passengers must present the original digital ticket on the same mobile phone that was used to book the journey. Screenshots of tickets or copies shared through messaging applications such as WhatsApp will no longer be accepted during ticket inspections.
If a passenger fails to show the original ticket on the registered booking device, they may be treated as travelling without a valid ticket and could face action under railway regulations.
R-Wallet Bonus Extended Until 2028
To encourage digital ticket purchases, Indian Railways has extended the existing three per cent bonus for passengers using the R-Wallet on the RailOne app.
The incentive will now continue until August 24, 2028, allowing regular users of digital general tickets to enjoy additional savings on eligible bookings.
Key Things Every Train Passenger Should Remember
Travellers booking general tickets online should keep a few important points in mind before boarding their train. They must carry a valid original photo identity card, ensure that the ticket remains available on the same mobile phone used for booking and avoid relying on screenshots or tickets forwarded through messaging apps, as these will not be accepted during verification.
With the redesigned IRCTC platform and updated ticketing rules, Indian Railways aims to make online reservations quicker, safer and more transparent while strengthening passenger verification across its digital services.
