Ration Card New Rule: Complete This Mandatory Process or Risk Losing Your Name
Ration card holders should take note of an important update. The government has introduced a new rule that makes annual biometric verification mandatory for every individual listed on a ration card. If any family member fails to complete biometric authentication for an entire year, their name may be removed from the ration card, affecting their eligibility to receive subsidised food grains.
Annual Biometric Verification Now Mandatory
Earlier, once a beneficiary completed the KYC process, no further updates were required. Under the revised rule, however, every person whose name appears on a ration card must visit the Public Distribution System (PDS) shop at least once a year and collect their ration using biometric authentication through a thumb impression.
Officials say this step is aimed at keeping beneficiary records updated and preventing ineligible claims.
Every Family Member Must Visit the PDS Shop
The new rule applies to all members listed on a ration card. For example, if a ration card has five members, each of them must personally visit the PDS shop and complete biometric verification during the year.
If only the head of the family or one member regularly collects the ration, the biometric records of the remaining members will not be updated. This could result in their names being deleted from the ration card.
PDS shopkeepers have also been instructed to ensure that biometric verification is completed for every beneficiary.
DSO Explains the New Rule
District Supply Officer (DSO) Pankaj Kumar clarified that if biometric verification of any individual listed on a ration card is not completed for one year, that person's name will be removed from the beneficiary list.
He advised all ration card holders to continue providing biometric authentication regularly to avoid losing their entitlement.
FCI Workers Protest New Distribution System
Meanwhile, dozens of workers at an FCI godown staged a protest against the government's new Direct Door Step Delivery (DSD) system.
According to the workers, the earlier process involved transporting food grains from FCI godowns to SSFC godowns, where labourers handled loading, unloading and distribution to fair price shops. With the implementation of the DSD system, they claim nearly 200 workers associated with the SSFC godown have lost their jobs, leaving many families facing financial hardship.
The protesting workers have urged the authorities to address their employment concerns while implementing the revised ration distribution system.
