RBI's Big News on Rs 2000 Note: Here's What You Need to Know
If you're still holding on to Rs 2000 notes , here's the latest scoop from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). In a recent update, the RBI shared crucial information about the current status of these high-denomination notes. Let's dive into the details and find out what this means for those still in possession of the Rs 2000 currency notes.
1. Recovery Statistics:
Since the withdrawal of Rs 2000 notes from circulation on May 19, 2023, the RBI has been closely monitoring the return of these notes. According to the latest data, a whopping 97.62 percent of Rs 2000 notes, amounting to Rs 3.56 lakh crore, have been returned to banks. As of February 29, 2024, only Rs 8,470 crore worth of Rs 2000 notes remain in circulation.
2. Legal Tender Status:
Despite the significant reduction in circulation, the RBI has clarified that Rs 2000 notes will continue to be legal tender. This means they retain their status as accepted currency in transactions.
3. Exchange Opportunities:
For those still holding on to Rs 2000 notes, the RBI is providing exchange facilities at its 19 offices across the country. Additionally, individuals can send these notes via India Post to any RBI office. The exchange and deposit deadline, initially set for September 30, 2023, was extended to October 7, 2023.
4. Post-Deadline Options :
From October 8, 2023, people have the option to exchange their Rs 2000 notes or deposit the amount in their bank accounts. This facility is available at RBI offices in key locations such as Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Delhi, and others.
In the wake of the withdrawal of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes in November 2016, the introduction of Rs 2000 notes sparked various discussions. Now, with the majority of these notes returned, the RBI continues to facilitate exchanges, ensuring a smooth transition for those still holding on to the soon-to-be rare Rs 2000 notes.
