Experts urge drivers to make simple air con change now or risk hefty fines
As the temperatures drop and drivers in the UK are turning off their air conditioning for the coming winter, car maintenance experts urge drivers to not do so.
This common habit for the winter can result in serious repairs, stubborn odours, and fines of up to £1,000. To avoid these fines, expensive repairs and risks to health this winter Fixter car experts have shared eight hacks on how to use your air con during these cold months and some maintenance tips.
A/C is commonly mistaken for being just for summer. It also works as a dehumidifier, preventing mould, odours, and risks to health if used regularly. Not using it in the winter may appear to be saving money, but it is actually the opposite.

Instead, moisture builds up, bacteria thrives and costly repairs. Having a misted windscreen is not only annoying, but can result in a £1,000 fine and three penalty points. A/C can be used to clear it and also regulating heating and cooling.
1. Run your A/C regularly, even on cooler settings
“Use your air con for 10 to 15 minutes once a week and occasionally on a colder setting. This keeps seals lubricated, prevents mould growth, and stops the compressor from seizing. A small habit like this can save you from costly long-term repairs.”
2. Demist your windscreen quickly to avoid fines
“The quickest and safest way to clear fog or frost is by combining warm air with your A/C. The system reduces humidity while the heat speeds up defogging. Direct airflow at the glass, avoid recirculation mode, and remember that driving with an unclear windscreen could cost you up to £1,000 in fines.”
3. Don’t skip your winter service
“Even if you are not blasting cold air, your A/C is still working behind the scenes. Regular servicing keeps the system efficient, stops bacteria build-up, and reduces the risk of breakdowns when you need it most.”
4. Check your cabin filter and airflow
"A clogged pollen or cabin filter restricts airflow, making demisting slower and your A/C work harder. If your vents feel weak, it could also signal low refrigerant. Both are quick fixes if caught early, but expensive if ignored.”
5. Don’t ignore bad smells
“Musty odours when you switch on your A/C are usually caused by mould or bacteria. Aside from being unpleasant, they affect cabin air quality and your health. A clean or filter replacement usually sorts it.”
6. Know the signs you may need a re-gas
"If your A/C is not blowing as cold as before (or not blowing cold air at all), gives off a bad smell when switched on, makes strange noises, or shows signs of a greasy film or pools of oil-like liquid under the vehicle, it’s likely time for a re-gas."
7. Protect your windscreen from further damage
"Using heating alone to clear a windscreen can put stress on the glass. Without A/C to balance humidity and temperature, small chips can quickly turn into cracks. Running your A/C alongside the heater helps clear the screen evenly, reducing the risk of costly repairs or a full windscreen replacement."
8. Clear vents before you drive
“Snow or ice blocking your car’s external vents can stop your A/C from circulating air properly, forcing the fan to overwork. Always brush them clear before setting off.”
Modern aircon for both heating and coolingMost drivers think air conditioning is to do with cooling but modern systems are for both heating and cooling. If not used regularly, moisture builds up in the system and inside the cabin which creates bad odours, mould and bacteria growth. This leads to health problems and bad cabin air quality.
"Visibility is another major concern. A misted windscreen can seriously obstruct the driver’s view, carrying the risk of a £1,000 fine and three penalty points."
Air con can be used to warm up the cabin, maintaining a good temperature throughout the colder months. Using it regularly allows there to be a consistent interior climate, preventing sudden hot or cold fluctuations that may distract or be uncomfortable while driving.
"Ultimately, running your air conditioning in colder months not only prevents costly system damage but also supports effective demisting MOT requirements, keeps your vehicle roadworthy, and ensures you stay safe and compliant in icy, foggy, or rainy conditions."
