Flight Baggage Rules 2026: Know the Check-in and Cabin Luggage Limits Before You Fly

The Golden Rule of Flying Light

Packing for a trip is exciting, but stepping onto the airport scale can quickly turn into a stressful moment if you don't know your airline’s limits. With airlines continuously tightening enforcement to ensure on-time departures, running over your luggage weight limit can result in hefty, unexpected out-of-pocket fees. For most domestic economy travelers in India, the baseline standard across the industry remains 15 kg for check-in baggage and 7 kg for cabin (hand) luggage. However, specific rules can change depending on which airline you book.

A Airline-by-Airline Breakdown of Domestic Rules

To ensure a smooth check-in experience, here is how the standard economy class baggage policies compare across India's primary domestic carriers:

  • Air India: As a full-service carrier, Air India typically offers more generous weight limits compared to low-cost airlines. Depending on your fare category (such as Comfort, Comfort Plus, or Flex), the domestic economy check-in allowance ranges between 15 kg and 25 kg per passenger, while cabin luggage is capped at 7 kg.

  • IndiGo: India’s largest low-cost carrier enforces a strict standard allowance of 15 kg for a single check-in bag and 7 kg for hand luggage. Passengers are allowed to bring one small laptop bag or ladies' purse as an additional personal item, provided it fits under the seat in front of them.

  • SpiceJet: Following the industry norm, SpiceJet permits 15 kg for checked luggage and 7 kg for cabin baggage. Travelers should note that additional pieces of check-in luggage require paying a "multiple-baggage" fee, even if the total weight stays below 15 kg.

  • Akasa Air: The fast-growing carrier keeps it simple with a standard 15 kg checked-in baggage allowance and a 7 kg hand luggage limit. They also provide specific paid add-ons for passengers looking to carry heavy musical instruments or sports equipment.

  • Alliance Air: Because Alliance Air mostly operates smaller, regional turboprop aircraft to smaller cities, weight limits are much tighter. The check-in baggage allowance is often restricted to 15 kg, but the cabin baggage limit is strictly capped at 5 kg due to smaller overhead bins.

Smart Packing Tips to Prevent Gate Fees

To ensure you never have to scramble and open your suitcase at the check-in counter, always measure your bags at home before heading out. Keep in mind that cabin luggage must fit the airline's sizing frames, which generally require dimensions under 55 cm x 35 cm x 25 cm. If you know you are going to exceed the weight limit due to heavy souvenirs or long trips, it is always significantly cheaper to pre-book extra baggage allowance online via the airline's app or website at least a few hours before your flight rather than paying the steep per-kilogram penalty at the airport terminal.
