The Closet Edit: A 90-Minute System That Actually Lasts
Closet organization is one of those tasks that feels enormous until you start. The problem isn't that you have too many clothes it's that you have too many clothes you don't wear, and they're hiding the ones you love. Here's a 90-minute system that doesn't require a full Marie Kondo transformation.
Minutes 0–15: Empty everything. Pull every single item out of your closet and onto your bed or floor. Yes, everything. This is the painful part, but it's necessary because you can't edit what you can't see. While it's out, wipe down the shelves and vacuum the floor.
Minutes 15–45: The three-pile sort. Go through each item and put it in one of three piles: Keep, Donate, and Maybe. The Keep pile is for things you wear regularly and genuinely love. The Donate pile is for things that don't fit, are stained or worn, or that you haven't worn in a year. The Maybe pile is for things you're unsure about limit this to no more than 10 items. Be honest: if it doesn't fit your body or your life right now, it goes.
Minutes 45–60: Organize by category, not by color. Group like items together: all pants, all shirts, all dresses, all outerwear. Within each category, you can organize by color if you want, but category first. This is how you actually find things. Use matching hangers for a cleaner look it costs about $15 for 20 velvet hangers and instantly makes your closet look more expensive.
Minutes 60–75: Store the off-season. Anything you won't wear for the next three months goes into a bin, a suitcase, or a high shelf. This immediately frees up 30–40% of your hanging space. Rotate twice a year , spring and fall.
Minutes 75–90: Handle the Maybes. Put the Maybe pile in a bag and stash it somewhere out of sight (under the bed, in the garage). Set a reminder for 30 days. If you haven't gone looking for any of those items by then, donate them without opening the bag.
That's it. Ninety minutes, and your closet goes from overwhelming to functional. The secret is speed don't overthink each item. If it's not an immediate yes, it's a no.
