Where did it all start from?

You must be wondering whether this is a new trend or something that Generation z started but, while the term has gained popularity over the last year, thanks to social media and iTV it actually goes back decades. Born within ballroom culture in the mid-to-late 20th century, to 'clock' someone meant to notice something they were trying to hide.

In ballroom, reading and shade were part of the art form, and 'clocking' someone was about perception, seeing it clearly, calling it out and protecting yourself through humour and wit, with documentaries like “Paris is burning” and shows like “RuPaul's Drag Race”, the language of ballroom found its way into mainstream pop culture. Today's clock it has evolved into something more playful. It can be assertive, funny or even supportive, depending on context and delivery, often paired with the now-iconic finger tap.

But like so many phrases that originated in queer spaces, it's important to remember where it came from. Know that you're echoing a legacy one born from the brilliance of our queer ancestors of colour. Since this originated in the 20th century there have been some changes. This viral Generation Z slang movement means to notice, recognize, or call out a hidden truth or obvious behavior. It is often paired with a dramatic look and a specific finger-tap gesture.

Why did it go viral?

Although Generation z don’t really have a hard time learning new things or trends that become easier, they are using it everywhere, in captions, reactions, memes and even casual conversations.

It became adaptable as it can be used in many ways. It can be funny, sarcastic or brutally honest depending on the situation. Across social media it has become a quick way to react without overexplaining. Like most viral internet phrases “clock it” exploded because it is easy to repeat and even easier to meme. The phrase already existed in online communities before social media pushed it into mainstream pop culture. A phrase becomes bigger when it creates a feeling people instantly understand.

The clock it song

The phrase was turned into a catchy, viral song by reality TV personality Ace Greene, whose track features lyrics that directly reference the catchphrase and prompt the finger-tapping dance move. The creators started using this audio for their dance challenges and reaction videos, dramatically doing lipsyncing and executing the finger.

Although it is just one of the most popular ongoing Geneartion Z trends it gains so much popularity because of its versatility and uniqueness. It is attractive as Generation Z has made sure to find ways to express themselves with minimum effort. The “clock it” trend fosters this approach, it explains the vibe and makes the environment welcoming to everyone to participate and be themselves.
