When we talk about the GenZ trends one that everyone around would have heard will be for sure the “Clock it” trend. The internet does move fast, but a phrase broke through it and became impossible to ignore. Right now that phase is “Clock it”, GenZ have turned this expression into a full blown cultural movement. This is not just a phrase anymore, it now comes with its own hand gesture across social media.

Where did it all start from?

You must be wondering whether this is a new trend or something that Generation z started but, while the term has gained popularity over the last year, thanks to social media and iTV it actually goes back decades. Born within ballroom culture in the mid-to-late 20th century, to 'clock' someone meant to notice something they were trying to hide.

In ballroom, reading and shade were part of the art form, and 'clocking' someone was about perception, seeing it clearly, calling it out and protecting yourself through humour and wit, with documentaries like “Paris is burning” and shows like “RuPaul's Drag Race”, the language of ballroom found its way into mainstream pop culture. Today's clock it has evolved into something more playful. It can be assertive, funny or even supportive, depending on context and delivery, often paired with the now-iconic finger tap.
