The Islamic New Year marks the beginning of a new year in the Islamic (Hijri) calendar. The year begins with the month of Muharram, one of the holiest months in Islam. In India, the Islamic New Year is expected to be observed on June 16 or 17 2026, depending on the sighting of the crescent moon, which marks the beginning of 1448 AH and the start of Muharram. If the crescent moon is sighted on the evening of 16 June, Muharram will begin immediately, otherwise, it will commence the following day. What is the Hijri Calendar?

The Hijri calendar began in 622 CE, based on the Hijra, the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina. This migration led to the establishment of the first Muslim community and is considered a major turning point in the history of Islam. The calendar was formally introduced during the rule of Caliph Umar ibn Al-Khattab.
