Significance of Day 6 of Navratri

The sixth day of Navratri is devoted to Maa Katyayani, one of the most ferocious manifestations of Goddess Durga. Known as Mahishasurmardini, she is worshipped as the slayer of the demon king Mahishasura. Radiating brilliance like a thousand suns, she rides a lion and holds a sword, lotus, and displays the Abhay Mudra, symbolising fearlessness. Astrologically, she rules Jupiter, and worshipping her is believed to bring relief to those with a weak Jupiter in their horoscope.

Her worship is celebrated with grandeur across India, especially in West Bengal, Odisha, Tripura, Bihar, and Kolkata, where Durga Puja follows her victory over Mahishasura.

Story of Maa Katyayani

According to Hindu scriptures, Sage Katyayan, a devout follower of Goddess Parvati, performed intense penance wishing for the Goddess to be born as his daughter. Pleased with his devotion, Parvati fulfilled his desire and took birth as his daughter, hence the name Katyayani. This divine form later became renowned as the powerful slayer of Mahishasura.
