Jack Man

One of the most important members of a Formula 1 pit crew is the Jack man. During a pit stop, this crew member uses a specialised jack to lift the car off the ground, allowing mechanics to replace the tyres as quickly as possible. Modern F1 pit stops are completed in just a few seconds, making the Jack Man’s time and accuracy crucial.

The front Jack Man positions themselves directly in front of the car. As soon as the driver stops in the correct position, they lift the front of the car. Meanwhile, the rear Jack Man quickly moves into place after the car has passed them and raises the rear of the car. Their coordination with the tyre changing crew is essential to ensure the stop is completed safely and efficiently.

Every movement during a pit stop is carefully rehearsed because even a slight delay can cost valuable track position. A perfectly executed job by the Jack Man helps the team minimise time spent in the pits and maximise the driver’s chance of success.
