‘I Have Only One Currency – Performance; Don’t Need Approval or Assurance From Anyone’: Virat Kohli’s Bold Reply To Critics
Virat Kohli , the current holder of the orange cap in the 2024 Indian Premier League, delivered a passionate response to his staunchest critics ahead of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru 's showdown against the defending champions Chennai Super Kings at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
In an interview with JioCinema, Kohli addressed the ongoing criticism he's faced throughout the season and leading up to the T20 World Cup 2024 . Much discussion has centered around Kohli's strike rate, with doubts lingering over his ability to deliver for both his franchise and the Indian team in the upcoming major tournament. Yet, Kohli remained resolute and stood by his abilities.
“I don’t need to react. I know what I can do on the ground. I don’t need to tell anyone about the kind of player I am and what my abilities are. I never asked people how to win games. I learned that by looking at the situation, failing and then I got it. It’s not that I have done it once or twice by chance. If you are there on so many occasions and doing it frequently then it cannot be chance” Kohli asserted.
Kohli also emphasized the disparity between observing the game from the sidelines and being in the thick of it. Drawing parallels, he referenced MS Dhoni , who often faced criticism for his approach of taking games deep but ultimately emerged victorious. Kohli believes both he and Dhoni possess a deep understanding of their craft, having sealed victories for their respective teams time and again.
“I always say that there is a massive difference between watching the game and experiencing it. People used to criticise MS Dhoni too on why he used to take the game so deep. He knows what he is doing and is winning it. That is knowing. For me, that is muscle memory. It’s different with me. I would think let’s finish it off in the 19th or 49th over,” Kohli elaborated on the disparity between himself and MS Dhoni.
Regarding the mounting criticism from pundits, Kohli expressed little concern about silencing them, relying solely on his on-field performances to speak for themselves.
“Never felt the need to go out and ask someone not to say these things about me. I know what I can do on the ground. I don’t need anyone’s approval or assurance that I played well. I’m honestly telling you I have no interest in that. I only have one form of currency that is performances,” Kohli retorted to his detractors.
