Setback For KL Rahul: Misses Final Test, IPL Participation Uncertain
KL Rahul is poised to sit out the concluding Test of the England series , commencing in Dharamsala on March 7. ESPNcricinfo has reported that Rahul is presently in London seeking advice from a specialist for the quadricep tendon injury , which sidelined him from the second, third and fourth Tests against England following his participation in the series opener in Hyderabad.
It is understood that his IPL team, Lucknow Super Giants, is monitoring his progress and remains hopeful about his availability for the tournament, which kicks off on March 22. The Super Giants are scheduled to play their inaugural match on March 24, a daytime fixture against Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur.
Rahul reported discomfort in his right quadriceps immediately after the first Test, which India lost. The initial diagnosis conducted by the BCCI medical staff at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, where Rahul underwent rehabilitation, indicated that he would recover in time for the third Test, held in Rajkot between February 15 to 18.
Despite being named in the squad for the final three Tests, subject to fitness, Rahul opted against travelling to Rajkot, expressing to the medical staff his lack of confidence in his quad's condition. Consequently, he missed the Vizag and Ranchi Tests as well, as he continued to experience stiffness in his right leg, despite scans conducted at the NCA revealing no significant issues.
Rahul is said to have communicated with the selectors to apprise them of the situation. Once the specialist in London submits a report, Rahul will require clearance from the NCA before returning to cricket.
Last year, Rahul underwent surgery after "tearing the tendon from his quadriceps" while fielding in an IPL match between Super Giants (where he captains) and Royal Challengers Bangalore. This injury not only sidelined him for the remainder of the IPL but also caused him to miss the World Test Championship final held last June.
Subsequently, Rahul participated in the Asia Cup followed by the World Cup.
