New WhatsApp Feature Lets Users Find Out If Someone Blocked Them Without Alerting Them
WhatsApp users on Android and iOS devices may soon have a new way to find out whether someone has blocked them on the messaging platform. According to a report by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp’s encryption verification feature could provide clues about a possible block without requiring users to send a message or make a call.
For years, WhatsApp users have depended on signs such as disappearing profile pictures, unanswered calls, or messages that remain stuck on a single check mark to guess whether they have been blocked. However, these signs are not always accurate because similar situations can happen due to privacy settings changes, device switches, or other account-related issues.
Now, WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption verification feature could offer another possible way to check block status more reliably.
To use the feature, users need to open a chat, tap on the contact’s name, and select the ‘Encryption’ option from the contact information page. WhatsApp will then automatically try to verify the encryption status of that conversation.
According to the report, if the verification process completes successfully, it indicates that the chat is working normally. However, if WhatsApp repeatedly fails to verify the encryption automatically and asks users to try other verification methods, it could be a possible sign that the contact has blocked them.
The feature may help users avoid unnecessary messages or calls when they are unsure whether they have been blocked on WhatsApp.
However, WhatsApp has not officially confirmed that the encryption verification feature can be used to detect blocked contacts. WABetaInfo also highlighted that while this behaviour can be tested in conversations where a block is already confirmed, users should consider it only an indication and not complete proof.
The updated WhatsApp encryption feature simplified the process by allowing users to check verification status more conveniently within the app.
While the encryption verification feature may provide useful clues about whether someone has blocked you on WhatsApp, users should remember that only WhatsApp can officially confirm how the feature works and whether it is intended for block detection.

WhatsApp Encryption Verification Feature May Reveal Block Status
The encryption verification feature was originally introduced to help users confirm that their chats are protected through WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption (E2EE). The security feature ensures that conversations between users remain private and can only be accessed by the sender and receiver. To use the feature, users need to open a chat, tap on the contact’s name, and select the ‘Encryption’ option from the contact information page. WhatsApp will then automatically try to verify the encryption status of that conversation.

WhatsApp Block Detection Method Does Not Notify Other Users
This possible WhatsApp block detection method could be useful because it allows users to check their status without directly interacting with the other person. Unlike sending a message or making a call, encryption verification does not involve any action that could alert the contact. The feature may help users avoid unnecessary messages or calls when they are unsure whether they have been blocked on WhatsApp.

WhatsApp Encryption Verification Feature: How It Works
WhatsApp introduced its automatic encryption verification feature in 2023 to make security checks easier for users. Before this update, users had to manually compare a 60-digit security code or scan a QR code with another participant to verify that their chat encryption was secure. The updated WhatsApp encryption feature simplified the process by allowing users to check verification status more conveniently within the app.
