Google Maps Launch 'Blackspots Alert' Feature to Enhance Road Safety

A feature dubbed “Blackspots Alert” is set to be rolled out on Google Maps, warning drivers in real-time when they are approaching high-risk accident zones. These alerts will appear 100–200 metres before a vehicle nears any of the 117 identified black spots in the capital—areas notorious for collisions due to factors such as speeding, poor infrastructure, and unsafe pedestrian layouts.

Prominent among these accident-prone areas are Azadpur, Wazirabad, and Anand Vihar—busy traffic hubs that often experience chaos during peak hours.

“This initiative marks a critical turning point in Delhi’s road safety efforts,”— a senior official from the Delhi Traffic Police.
According to the official, the technology is akin to existing Google Maps features that inform users about traffic congestion or road construction. However, this tool shifts the focus from navigation convenience to life-saving interventions.

The alerts will resemble regular GPS prompts but will urge drivers to slow down and drive with caution instead of directing route changes.

How It Works

The feature draws on Google’s Roads Management Insights, a system that leverages data analytics and user feedback to identify accident-prone zones. The initiative takes cues from a successful pilot project in Punjab, where 784 black spots were mapped using the Maples app.

Now, the Delhi Traffic Police is working to replicate and expand this model with not only digital alerts but also broader road safety reforms.

This effort comes under a recently launched 100-day action plan by the traffic department, which also includes:

• Repainting road markings

Relocating hazardous bus stops

Upgrading pedestrian crossings

Additionally, officials are exploring the integration of speed limit data into Google Maps, aiming to reduce confusion caused by inconsistent signage—a factor often cited in accident reports. Real-time speed limit prompts could encourage better compliance and more informed driving.
