Google Rolls Out Robust Anti-Theft Features For Android Devices
Google has introduced a significant security enhancement for Android smartphones, making them more resilient to theft. While the new feature won’t physically protect your phone, it adds a robust layer of security that makes it nearly useless to a thief if stolen. The newly launched " theft detection lock " ensures that personal data remains secure and inaccessible to thieves.
Currently being rolled out to Android users in the US, the feature was first spotted on the Xiaomi 14T Pro and was reported by Mishaal Rahman on Threads. The update brings three major security improvements: theft detection lock, offline device lock , and remote lock .
The theft detection lock uses a machine learning algorithm to recognize when a phone is forcibly taken from the user. If it senses suspicious behavior, such as the thief running away with the phone, the device will automatically activate the theft detection lock. This mode instantly locks the phone, preventing unauthorized access to sensitive data.
In addition, the offline device lock is triggered when a thief attempts to disconnect the phone from the internet for a long duration. Meanwhile, the remote lock feature allows owners to lock their stolen device using the Find My Device tool, even from a distance, giving users more control over their data.
Google has been testing these features in beta since August, and they will soon be available to all eligible Android devices. Users can access the features under Settings > Google > Google Services. To ensure you benefit from these enhanced protections, make sure your device is running the latest version of Google Play services .
