India’s diplomatic engagement with Nordic nations has been the talk of the town as the prime ministers did not just talk about global cooperation and partnerships but there were also meaningful exchanges of cultural gifts which were presented to the Prime Ministers of Iceland who is Kristrún Frostadóttir and Sweden who is Ulf Kristersson . One of the most remarkable gifts was presented to the Prime Minister of Iceland, Kristrún Frostadóttir. PM Narendra Modi presented a replica of the legendary ice axe carried by Tenzing Norgay during the first successful ascent of Mount Everest in 1953 with Edmund Hillary.

It was crafted in steel with a strong, polished wooden shaft. The replica captures the simplicity, resilience, and precision which is essential to high-altitude mountaineering.

Iceland is a nation known for its glaciers, volcanic landscapes, and adventure tourism and therefore the gift holds special significance.

Shantiniketan Messenger Bag Presented to Sweden PM

The Prime Minister of Sweden, Ulf Kristersson also received something special and that was a handcrafted messenger bag from Shantiniketan, famously known as the ‘Abode of Peace’.

The Shantiniketan craft, protected under the Geographical Indication tag, traces its roots to Tagore’s vision of blending folk art with modern aesthetics while supporting rural artisans in West Bengal’s Birbhum district.

The bag represents sustainable livelihoods, cultural preservation, and the timeless connection between tradition and contemporary design and it is therefore a lot more than just a fashion accessory.

Rabindranath Tagore’s Literary Works Strengthen India-Sweden Cultural Ties

In addition to the handcrafted bag, the Swedish Prime Minister was also gifted a selection of works by Rabindranath Tagore, including Words of the Master. Tagore is one of the most influential literary philosophers of the last century.

In 1913, he became the first non-European to win a Nobel prize in Literature for his celebrated work Gitanjali. His writings explored themes of freedom, spirituality, compassion, nature, and universal humanism, making his work relevant across cultures and generations.
