Noted Russian "rooftopping" artists Ivan Beerkus (Ivan Kuznetsov) and Angela Nikolau (Angelina Nikolau) managed to infiltrate restricted, extreme-altitude zones of the iconic Empire State Building. The daredevil couple is already globally famous as the subjects of the 2024 Netflix documentary Skywalkers: A Love Story, which heavily chronicled their underground urban climbing exploits and evolving romantic partnership. News helicopters capturing live aerial footage showed the pair lingering on the spindly metallic framework before picking their way down to a slightly wider lower platform. It was there that Beerkus set up photography equipment and dropped to one knee to officially propose, after which Nikolau was seen admiring her engagement ring and taking selfies.
However, the stunt triggered an immediate, large-scale tactical response from law enforcement. The New York Police Department deployed aviation units and tracking drones to monitor the couple while heavily geared officers from the Emergency Services Unit (ESU) scaled the internal service ladders of the spire to intercept them. Body-camera footage released by the NYPD captured an officer greeting the couple with, "Well, you can't be up here," to which an off-camera voice calmly responded, "We are engaged."
Upon safely descending back to the observation balcony, the couple was immediately taken into custody. Both climbers face serious criminal allegations, including felony burglary defined under New York law as unlawfully entering a structure with intent to commit an offense alongside reckless endangerment.
