Indian Railways Digital Ticket Rules: Screenshots, PDFs And WhatsApp Ticket Copies No Longer Valid
Indian Railways digital ticket rules have been reinforced with a fresh advisory for passengers using digital unreserved tickets. The railway authorities have clarified that only the original ticket displayed in the Rail One app will be accepted during ticket inspections. Screenshots, PDF files, photographs, or tickets shared through WhatsApp or any other messaging platform will not be treated as valid travel documents. The move is aimed at preventing misuse of digital tickets and ensuring smoother verification during journeys.
The updated instructions are applicable only to digital unreserved tickets booked through the Rail One app and require passengers to carry the same mobile phone and registered mobile number used while booking the ticket.
Only the Original Rail One App Ticket Will Be Accepted
Indian Railways has made it clear that passengers must present the original digital ticket within the Rail One app whenever a travelling ticket examiner (TTE) asks for verification.
The following will not be accepted as proof of travel:
Railway officials have emphasised that the ticket should remain accessible on the same smartphone on which it was originally booked using the registered mobile number.
Ticket Must Be Linked to the Registered Mobile Number
According to the revised guidelines, a digital unreserved ticket is considered valid only if it can be displayed on the device and mobile number used during booking.
If a passenger fails to produce the original ticket from the registered device during inspection, the ticket may be treated as invalid, which could result in penalties under railway rules.
Passenger Penalised After Showing WhatsApp Screenshot
The clarification follows a recent incident on the Korba–Visakhapatnam Link Express (Train No. 18517).
During a routine ticket inspection, a woman travelling between Korba and Raipur presented a WhatsApp screenshot of her digital ticket. She informed the TTE that the ticket had been booked by her brother through the Rail One app and later forwarded to her.
However, during verification, officials found that:
As the ticket did not meet the prescribed verification requirements, it was declared invalid and the passenger was fined in accordance with railway regulations.
Digital Tickets Must Be Booked Before Train Departure
Indian Railways has also reminded passengers that digital unreserved tickets must be purchased before the train leaves the boarding station.
Even if the ticket appears in the Rail One app, it will not be considered valid if it was generated after the scheduled departure of the train from the boarding station.
Passengers are therefore advised to complete ticket booking before boarding the train to avoid any inconvenience during inspection.
Railways Advises Passengers to Follow These Precautions
To ensure a hassle-free journey, Indian Railways has issued several recommendations for passengers using digital unreserved tickets:
Officials have warned that failure to display the original digital ticket could lead to fines or other travel-related complications.
Do These Rules Apply to Reserved Tickets?
No. The latest clarification applies only to digital unreserved tickets booked through the Rail One app.
Reserved tickets are governed by a different verification process, where passengers are required to establish their identity using valid government-issued identification documents during ticket checks. Therefore, the latest advisory does not change the existing rules for reserved ticket holders.
Railways Reiterates Digital Ticket Verification Policy
Railway authorities have reiterated that the original digital ticket available within the Rail One app is the only acceptable proof for unreserved travel booked through the platform. By rejecting screenshots, PDFs and forwarded ticket copies, Indian Railways aims to strengthen ticket verification, reduce fraudulent practices and ensure that digital ticketing remains secure and reliable for all passengers.
