Nanda Devi: Uttarakhand’s Tallest Himalayan Peak

Nanda Devi Is The Highest Mountain In Uttarakhand

Nanda Devi is the tallest mountain in Uttarakhand, located in the Chamoli district of the Garhwal Himalayas . Rising to an incredible height of 7,816 metres above sea level, the peak is also recognised as the highest mountain located entirely within Indian territory.

Although Kanchenjunga is taller, it lies on the border between India and Nepal. This gives Nanda Devi the unique distinction of being India’s highest completely internal mountain peak.

The mountain consists of two peaks. The main western summit is the tallest, while the eastern summit is known as Nanda Devi East or Sunanda Devi. Both peaks are surrounded by rugged terrain, glaciers, and dense forests.

A UNESCO Protected Himalayan Treasure

Nanda Devi is encircled by a natural ring of towering mountains that form the famous Nanda Devi Sanctuary. This protected area lies within the Nanda Devi National Park , which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.

The region is known for its rich biodiversity and untouched Himalayan ecosystem. Rare animals such as snow leopards, Himalayan musk deer, bharal, and several bird species inhabit the park.

Because of its ecological importance and fragile environment, access to many parts of the sanctuary remains highly restricted.
