Impatiens rajibiana: A Unique Endemic Species

Impatiens rajibiana was identified during surveys of Arunachal Pradesh’s natural forests. Belonging to the balsam family, the plant is notable for its vibrant flowers and distinctive seed dispersal mechanism. Found exclusively in the Shergaon area, the discovery enriches the list of native flora documented by the BSI and underscores the ecological uniqueness of the region.

Arunachal Pradesh: A Biodiversity Treasure

The state is home to numerous rare and endemic plants, including previously discovered species like Impatiens godfreyi and Impatiens sashinborthakurii. These findings illustrate the rich biodiversity of Arunachal Pradesh and the urgent need to conserve its vulnerable habitats. India hosts roughly 230 species of balsam, with Impatiens balsamina, commonly known as garden balsam or touch-me-not, being widely cultivated. Balsam species contribute significantly to ecosystem health and also have medicinal value.

Botanical Survey of India’s Role

The BSI continues to lead the way in plant diversity documentation across India. Through systematic fieldwork and cataloguing, the organisation provides vital insights into the country’s flora, supports conservation policies, and contributes to ecological research.

The discovery of Impatiens rajibiana highlights the importance of protecting forest ecosystems that harbour unique species. New plant discoveries not only enhance ecosystem stability but also strengthen India’s natural heritage and provide essential data for scientific research and conservation initiatives.
