The initiative was first launched on Instagram last year before being expanded to Facebook and Messenger in select countries. Its global rollout aims to provide teenagers with a safer online experience across Meta platforms.

Restrictions Designed to Ease Parental Concerns

Meta has built in automatic protections to address parents’ top concerns. These restrictions limit:

  • What content they can access

For users under 16, these limits cannot be removed without parental consent, ensuring a secure environment and promoting responsible social media usage.

Meta emphasises that the goal of these Teen accounts is to ensure that the time spent by young users on these platforms is safe, positive, and meaningful.
