WhatsApp Beta Users Experience Google Drive Storage Impact as Chat Backups Count Towards Allocation
In a recent development, WhatsApp, the widely used instant messaging platform owned by Meta , made changes to its terms and conditions last year. One significant adjustment announced was that chat backups would soon contribute to a user's Google Drive storage space.
Android users currently testing the beta version of WhatsApp are already feeling the effects, with chat backups utilising storage regardless of whether the user is on the free or paid tier of Google's cloud storage service.
For those on WhatsApp beta seeking to prevent their chat backups from consuming their entire Google Drive storage, an alternative approach is available. Users can cease backing up chats to the cloud service and, instead, utilise the built-in WhatsApp Chat Transfer tool when transitioning to a new phone. Notably, this method requires both the old and new devices to be on the same Wi-Fi network and doesn't necessitate an active internet connection.
Another option for users facing storage constraints is to expand their Google Drive capacity by subscribing to a Google One plan. Alternatively, they can choose not to include images and videos when backing up WhatsApp chat history, as these media files can significantly inflate the backup size.
WhatsApp has indicated that these changes will extend to users on the stable version of the app in the first half of 2024. To provide users with a heads-up, the company plans to send an in-app notification 30 days before implementation. This notification will appear as a banner in the 'Chat Backup' section under the app's settings.
