Cyclone Montha: IMD issues orange alert for Chennai, heavy rain expected in Tamil Nadu
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy to very heavy rain in isolated areas across Ranipet, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chennai , prompting an orange alert for these districts. A yellow alert has also been issued for Villuppuram, Chengalpattu, and Puducherry.
Cyclone Montha , pronounced 'Mon-Tha', is currently moving west-northwest over the southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal at a speed of 16 kmph. As of early Monday, it was located about 600 km east-southeast of Chennai and 710 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam.
The storm is expected to strengthen into a Severe Cyclonic Storm by Tuesday morning and make landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, near Kakinada, by the evening or night of October 28. Wind speeds could reach 90–100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph during landfall.
Chennai is set to experience cooler weather and moderate rainfall due to the cyclone. Popular weather blogger R. Pradeep John, known as the " Tamil Nadu Weatherman ," said, "Cyclone Montha will give moderate rains to Chennai overall. It will also bring very chill weather to Chennai. Very heavy rains are going to miss the city, though north Chennai will receive more rainfall - around 50-70 mm - compared to south Chennai, which may get 10-50 mm."
He added that Gummidipoondi, Ponneri, and Pulicat areas near the Andhra border may receive heavier rain, with some spillover into North Chennai. Rains are expected to start by Monday morning and continue through the day with a few intense spells before easing by Tuesday morning.
"So Pa groups get ready to school tomorrow even if there are rains, it will be manageable ones," he humorously remarked.
