History of Father's Day
The origin of Father’s day can be traced back to the 20th century in the United States. The credits of this idea should be given to Sonora Smart Dodd, a woman from Washington, who got her inspiration from Mother’s Day celebrations. She noticed that fathers should also be honoured and deserve their own day of recognition. Her inspiration came from her own father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran who raised six children after the death of his wife by himself.
Sonora deeply admired her father's dedication and sacrifices as a single parent. After noticing the growing popularity of Mother’s Day, she campaigned for the establishment of Father's Day which resulted in the first official Father's Day. The first celebration was held in Spokane, Washington, on June 19, 1910. It gradually gained popularity across the United States. And in 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued a proclamation designating the third Sunday of June as Father's Day. Later this day got its national recognition in 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed it into law.
Today, Father's Day is celebrated in many countries around the world, serving as a tribute to fathers and father figures who play an important role in their families and communities.
